A key ele\u00adment of the regu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon is <strong>Artic\u00adle&nbsp;5 PPWR<\/strong>, which governs the rest\u00adric\u00adtion of so\u2011called <strong>sub\u00ads\u00adtances of con\u00adcern<\/strong>. Par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar atten\u00adti\u00adon is paid to <strong>PFAS (per\u2011 and poly\u00adfluo\u00adri\u00adna\u00adted alkyl sub\u00ads\u00adtances)<\/strong> in <strong>food cont\u00adact pack\u00ada\u00adging<\/strong>.  <\/p><p>The new requi\u00adre\u00adments will app\u00adly direct\u00adly <strong>in all EU Mem\u00adber Sta\u00adtes from 12 August 2026<\/strong>. For manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adr\u00aders, importers and brand owners, this means <strong>imme\u00addia\u00adte need for action<\/strong> with regard to mate\u00adri\u00adal com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons, sup\u00adp\u00adly chains and tech\u00adni\u00adcal docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-53fb292 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"53fb292\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>What does Artic\u00adle 5 of the PPWR regu\u00adla\u00adte with regard to sub\u00ads\u00adtances of con\u00adcern?<\/h2><p>Artic\u00adle&nbsp;5 fol\u00adlows a two\u2011step approach.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cea7072 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cea7072\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Gene\u00adral mini\u00admi\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon obli\u00adga\u00adti\u00adon<\/h4><p>First, the PPWR requi\u00adres that pack\u00ada\u00adging be manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adred in such a way that the <strong>pre\u00adsence and con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon of sub\u00ads\u00adtances of con\u00adcern<\/strong> in pack\u00ada\u00adging mate\u00adri\u00adals and pack\u00ada\u00adging com\u00adpon\u00adents are <strong>redu\u00adced to a mini\u00admum<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This obli\u00adga\u00adti\u00adon is deli\u00adbera\u00adte\u00adly broad and appli\u00ades to all sub\u00ads\u00adtances that<\/p><ul><li>may pose a risk to <strong>human health<\/strong>, or<\/li><li>may impair<strong> recy\u00adcling pro\u00adces\u00adses and mate\u00adri\u00adal cycles<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89dc9f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"89dc9f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Spe\u00adci\u00adfic limit values for cer\u00adtain sub\u00ads\u00adtances<\/h4><p>In addi\u00adti\u00adon, Artic\u00adle&nbsp;5 sets <strong>bin\u00adding limit values<\/strong> for sel\u00adec\u00adted sub\u00ads\u00adtance groups, inclu\u00adding:<\/p><ul><li>the four <strong>hea\u00advy metals<\/strong> lead, cad\u00admi\u00adum, mer\u00adcu\u00adry and hex\u00ada\u00adva\u00adlent chro\u00admi\u00adum<\/li><li><strong>PFAS in food cont\u00adact pack\u00ada\u00adging<\/strong>, often refer\u00adred to as \u201cfore\u00adver che\u00admi\u00adcals\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-58258ef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"58258ef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>PFAS are a lar\u00adge group of syn\u00adthe\u00adtic che\u00admi\u00adcals with grease\u2011, water\u2011 or dirt\u2011repellent pro\u00adper\u00adties and are cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adri\u00adsed by their <strong>high envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal per\u00adsis\u00adtence<\/strong>. The aim of the PPWR is to redu\u00adce their nega\u00adti\u00adve impacts on human health, the envi\u00adron\u00adment and recy\u00adcla\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b3ee2cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b3ee2cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Spe\u00adci\u00adfic limit values under Artic\u00adle 5 of the PPWR <\/h2><h3>Hea\u00advy metals<\/h3><p>The com\u00adbi\u00adned total of lead, cad\u00admi\u00adum, mer\u00adcu\u00adry and hex\u00ada\u00adva\u00adlent chro\u00admi\u00adum must not exceed <strong>100\u202fmg\/kg<\/strong>.<br>This limit appli\u00ades to all pack\u00ada\u00adging, regard\u00adless of its inten\u00added use. <\/p><h3>PFAS in Lebens\u00admit\u00adtel\u00adkon\u00adtakt\u00adver\u00adpa\u00adckun\u00adgen<\/h3><p> From 12 August 2026, food cont\u00adact pack\u00ada\u00adging may no lon\u00adger be pla\u00adced on the mar\u00adket if it <strong>rea\u00adches or exceeds<\/strong> the fol\u00adlo\u00adwing limit values:<\/p><ul><li><strong>25\u202fppb<\/strong> for indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal PFAS (tar\u00adge\u00adted ana\u00adly\u00adsis; poly\u00adme\u00adric PFAS excluded)<\/li><li><strong>250\u202fppb<\/strong> for the sum of PFAS (sum of tar\u00adge\u00adted ana\u00adly\u00adses; poly\u00adme\u00adric PFAS excluded)<\/li><li><strong>50\u202fppm<\/strong> for PFAS inclu\u00adding poly\u00adme\u00adric PFAS<\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><p><strong>Important for prac\u00adti\u00adcal imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon:<\/strong> mar\u00adke\u00adta\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty depends sole\u00adly on the veri\u00adfied con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon. A manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adrer is any eco\u00adno\u00admic ope\u00adra\u00adtor who: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>manu\u00adfac\u00adtures pack\u00ada\u00adging or packa\u00adged pro\u00adducts, or<\/li>\n<li>has them desi\u00adgned or manu\u00adfac\u00adtu\u00adred under its own name or trade\u00admark, and<\/li>\n<li>places them on the EU mar\u00adket for the first time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>brand owners<\/li>\n<li>retail\u00aders with pri\u00adva\u00adte labels<\/li>\n<li>importers (in the case of imports from third count\u00adries)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Important: online retail\u00aders may also fall under the manufacturer\u2019s respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 id=\"elementor-tab-title-1122\"
