Did you know that the tex­ti­le indus­try is the third lar­gest con­su­mer of water? More than 93 bil­li­on cubic met­res of water are used annu­al­ly for tex­ti­le pro­duc­tion. This year’s Earth Day, with “water” as its cen­tral the­me, aimed to rai­se awa­re­ness about the sus­tainable use of resour­ces. Cli­ma­te pro­tec­tion cam­paigns were orga­nis­ed in over 150 count­ries around the world.

Coll­ec­ting, sort­ing and dona­ting clo­thes

We tho­rough­ly sear­ched our ward­ro­bes for clo­thes in good con­di­ti­on, coll­ec­ted and sor­ted them out. In just three days, we were able to coll­ect seven lar­ge bags of clot­hing, most­ly for child­ren and women, which we dona­ted to the “Veedels­schrank”. This initia­ti­ve of the church com­mu­ni­ty in the Colo­gne-Sülz neigh­bour­hood sup­ports eco­no­mic­al­ly dis­ad­van­ta­ged fami­lies and the inte­gra­ti­on of refu­gee women through work oppor­tu­ni­ties. It also pro­mo­tes sus­taina­bi­li­ty by recy­cling and upcy­cling clot­hing. The children’s clot­hing was dona­ted to the Lever­ku­sen com­mu­ni­ty foun­da­ti­on Stern­ta­ler, which sup­ports child­ren and young peo­p­le in need.

Con­ser­ving resour­ces through regio­nal com­mu­ni­ty invol­vement

By dona­ting clo­thes to local cha­ri­ties, we pro­mo­te the regio­nal reu­se of tex­ti­les and help to save valuable resour­ces such as water and CO₂ emis­si­ons. The lar­ge amount of clot­hing that we have sor­ted out and no lon­ger need shows us the importance of using our resour­ces con­scious­ly. By rethin­king our con­sump­ti­on habits and making a con­scious effort to reu­se clo­thes, we are actively hel­ping to redu­ce the amount of tex­ti­les that land in the bin and can con­ti­nue to be used ins­tead.

Sus­taina­bi­li­ty at the heart of our ser­vices

Envi­ron­men­tal pro­tec­tion and sus­taina­bi­li­ty are an inte­gral part of our busi­ness phi­lo­so­phy. Many simi­lar acti­vi­ties were car­ri­ed out in the Reco­no­my fami­ly for this year’s Earth Day in order to assu­me social respon­si­bi­li­ty tog­e­ther as part of socie­ty and to rea­li­ze our visi­on of a sus­tainable world.
